bristol

My first time in Bristol is dated 2007 when I went to visit a friend I met on a indie rock party in one of the biggest club of Barcelona called Razzmatazz. I knew I already would have liked the city, so when she asked me if I was up for a short visit, I did not think twice. The city is nice, walkable, with a pretty easy going vibe and has one of the best music scene in the whole UK. Between the things I remember from the time I was there, one is certainly the first graffiti of Banksy I have seen, made it when the artist was probably not worldwide famous yet and the Clifton Suspension Bridge that somehow seems to be the main attraction there.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel was one of the greatest civil engineers England ever had during the industrial times. Born in 1806, he is partly responsible of the building of the first tunnel under Thames, of the construction of the Great Western Railway and of course of the beautiful Clifton bridge which takes the name from one the Bristol districts, Clifton, that was named like that due to its position on a cliff hill. The bridge makes me think instantly at some of the infrastructure I have seen walking the Camino de Santiago in Oporto, mostly the one made by Gustave Eiffel. Unfortunately the construction of the bridge was postponed and Brunel did not live long enough to see it finished but he made a lot for Britain regardless and he is nowadays still considered as one of the most influential people England ever had and a key figure of the industrial revolution. Bristol is also well-known for its music scene, especially electronic music. During my name there I had the chance to see Simian Mobile Disco in a club located inside a boat on one of the countless canals the city has, called Thekla which recalled me a bit of Razzmatazz and the reason why I came to visit this beautiful part of England.
